SumCo continued sediment excavation throughout August to create the appropriate ground elevations for the new stream channel and placed river stone in the channel to prepare for re-introduction of stream flow into the newly created channel. Sediment has continued to be transported for disposal to Seneca landfill in New York. The new river channel remained stable during high rain periods in late July, August, and early September.
SumCo completed excavation of sediments on the east side of the site and plans to complete sediment excavation on the western riverbank by mid-September. Installation of geocells above remaining sediment is expected to begin in the week after Labor Day and will provide an impenetrable barrier to sediment remaining below. Sediment testing has continued throughout the process, and sampling has not identified any material characterized as PCB remediation waste.
