July 28, 2026, Construction Update

In June and early July, SumCo continued sediment excavation to create the appropriate ground elevations for the new stream channel and placed river stone in the channel to prepare for re-introduction of stream flow into the newly created channel.  Sediment has continued to be transported for disposal to Seneca landfill in New York. 

During June and early July, the by-pass channel continued to function effectively to pass stream flow around the active sediment excavation area. On Monday July 20, SumCo redirected the stream flow into the new river channel and closed the by-pass channel to flowing water. The restored channel has been effectively conveying stream flow for the past week. SumCo is now excavating sediment from the previous by-pass channel to create the final ground elevations on the east side of the side. 

Completion of sediment excavation is anticipated by the end of Summer 2026. Installation of geocells above remaining sediment is expected to begin in mid to late August and will provide an impenetrable barrier to sediment remaining below. Sediment testing has continued throughout the process, and sampling has not identified any material characterized as PCB remediation waste.
