June 6, 2025 Construction Update
Construction progress on-site has been relatively slow in May. The pedestrian bridge that previously existed above the dam has been removed, erosion controls have been installed, and clearing has been completed within the project limits upstream of the dam. SumCo recently completed installation of a temporary bridge to access the eastern portion of the staging area located downstream of Bel Air Dam. This downstream staging area will be used as needed to temporarily stockpile excavated sediment that cannot be immediately removed for disposal off-site, however the majority of sediment is expected to be staged within the impoundment area upstream of the dam and directly removed via trucks exiting the site adjacent to the dam and travelling north on Wahconah Street to off-site disposal locations. In the next week, SumCo plans to complete preparation of the downstream sediment staging area and the construction entrance at the dam. Baseline air quality monitoring at the site has been completed. Work on a temporary by-pass channel on the eastern side of the impoundment is expected to begin the week of June 18. This by-pass channel will be used to direct upstream water flow entering the site around active dredging areas and discharge it downstream of active work at the general location of the existing dam.
